Continental, the Frankfurt transport authority (Verkehrsgesellschaft Frankfurt am Main – VGF) and Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences (Frankfurt UAS) are currently undertaking a three-day, autonomous vehicle trial at the Frankfurt UAS campus.

Students accompanied by a trained test engineer can use Conti’s driverless CUbE (Continental Urban Mobility Experience) as transport to get across the campus as many times as they like.

The aim of the trial is to collect practical experience in the operation of driverless vehicles as part of a collaboration between Continental; EasyMile, an intelligent mobility solution integrator; and VGF as the potential future operator of such mobility systems. It will also look at the opportunities for fully autonomous driving in urban areas.

As part of the trial, the requirements for driverless mobility and usage models will be investigated. The Frankfurt UAS campus provides the ideal conditions for this. Afterward passengers will be asked to complete a short questionnaire about the journey.

“With this trial, we are making future mobility concepts a reality and at the same time collecting valuable empirical data. We are leveraging our corporate-wide expertise in automation and mobility concepts to develop solutions for the urban traffic of tomorrow and, in particular, to improve the quality of life in urban environments,” explained Dr Andree Hohm, head of the self-driving car project at Continental.
